A small collection of quotes from petition signees
- I just want to thank you for your 'Ask why - Say No' campaign and the very valuable articles on that site and the links. I have signed the petition. I am a retired teacher (of adolescents) and retired Catholic priest/university chaplain and I have had dogs for thirty years. In my retirement I am studying Dogs and I have been reading through the maze of theories and practice of training - and have been somewhat appalled at the still widespread use and promotion of the 'dominance theory' and all that. So thanks for your words and your work. I am recommending it to all I meet who are involved with dogs. I look forward to any further teachings you may give.
- Training at any stage and at any age should be fun and rewarding for all concerned. Teaching a dog how to live in the environment that we have created for him can be achieved through compassion, kindness and understanding. It is when understanding stops that violence begins.
- As a veterinary nurse and a member of CAPBT I fully support the above statement and dearly hope to see an end to all aversive techniques that are used in dog training today due to the misguided belief that our beloved friend, the dog, is showing "dominant" behaviour.
- In my opinion as a veterinary surgeon, dogs should be educated kindly and encouragingly how to learn adequate manners for a harmonious life with us and so that we have a happy respect for each other’s company, not fear.
- Dogs are mammals and have the same fundamental emotions as humans so we have a duty to avoid negative feelings in education and a responsibility to make it enjoyable for us and our dogs. Then we can share happiness together. By our vigorous effort we may also then understand their behaviour much better. (Japan)
- Don't get a dog if you don't want to be kind to it. If you want to be a control freak, try it out on humans, they have the opportunity to ignore you.
- It's about time! People need to understand that dominance simply doesn't exist and comparing them to research based on a wild ancestor is ridiculous. That research has now been accepted by most for being flawed in any event. Dogs do not want to take over the world and the sooner people realised that the better!
- I am a psychologist specialising in behaviourism and have worked with the owners of dogs with behavioural "problems". I am absolutely convinced that the greatest challenges facing domestic animals today are those created by the behavioural demands placed on them by society and, by association, their owners. We owe it to those who cannot understand our world not to punish them for our perceived transgressions. Our role is to lead and care, not to punish and scare.
- Working as a Veterinary Nurse as well as a Clever Dog Instructor, I find it heartbreaking having to help euthanase young fit dogs who have shown aggression & / or bitten. The majority of these dogs have retaliated due to experiencing immense fear. Dog trainers who advise owners to use coercive & punitive methods do not realise they are placing dogs lives on the line as well as owners.
- It's time to stop the ignorant control freaks from abusing their dogs. I love my dog. I don't hurt the things I love.
- For all positive reinforcement trainers, behaviorists, pet professionals and dog owner/guardians: hang in there and continue to spread the good word! For each client we reach, that person will pass on how wonderful and effective positive methods are. (USA)
- If a child was frightened would we scare the child? If a child was angry would we use anger to solve the problem? If the answer is Yes you shouldn't have a child. If you would respond the same way with your dog, you shouldn't have a dog. If you are being shown these methods to train your dog then find another trainer!!! And fast.
